Show You’re Proudly South African this Heritage Day

Walk or drive through any neighbourhood on 24 September and there is sure to be that wonderful braai smell in the air. That’s because Heritage Day is the one day we spend doing something that makes us proud to live here – like cooking some meat over a fire, or visiting a museum. Not sure how you’d like to show your cultural pride this Heritage Day? We’ve got a few Heritage Day activities freshly picked for you…

Proudly South African Heritage Day Activities:

Visit a Heritage Site

Few things are as fascinating as looking into one’s past – to see who came before us; who forged a path for us; and to learn valuable lessons from the past.

Museums, battlegrounds, monuments and exhibitions scatter our fair nation. From Robben Island at the Cape, to the Cradle of Humankind in the North West.

Not keen on spending bucks? Take a trip to the beach and soak it all up – the power of the ocean, our golden coastlines.

Dress Up Traditionally

If clothing is a big thing in your culture, shine like the peacock you know you are and don attire from a bygone era this Heritage Day.

If you’re not in possession of a Saree, leopard skin loincloths or a khaki farmer’s outfit – find something in the South African colours and wear that!

Ideas include South African flag ribbons, carrying a little South African flag, and slapping a South African flag sticker on your cheek!

Gift Someone South African Cuisine

What do Mrs. Balls Chutney, Ouma Rusks, and biltong have in common? Yep, they’re all proudly South African! Got a friend who’se just moved to SA from abroad?

Wrap up all of the goodies in a SA Flag cooler bag, tie on a card, and it makes the perfect neighbourly Heritage Day gift idea! Alternatively, host a dinner at your home and serve traditional dishes from a bunch of South African cultures!

Host a Braaivleis

Commonly refered to as simply a ‘braai’, the event that is a braaivleis involves three main elements: meat cooked over a flame, salads, and good company.

This proudly South African past-time crosses cultural borders, to the extent that the nickname given to Heritage Day is actually braai day (read up about the Braai Day mission here).

Pack some wood, put on some music, and celebrate our heritage Mzansi style!
